Gold and the dollar index (DXY): why they often move apart

Short answer: The dollar index measures the US dollar against six major currencies, led by the euro. Gold often falls when the dollar rises, because gold is priced in dollars and a strong dollar usually comes with higher US rates. But the link is loose: in a crisis both can rise together, and other drivers can outweigh the dollar for months.

When gold traders say "the dollar is strong", they usually mean the dollar index has risen. It is one of the first things to check when gold moves sharply and you want to know why.

What the index measures

The index compares the dollar with six currencies: the euro, the yen, the pound, the Canadian dollar, the Swedish krona and the Swiss franc. The euro makes up more than half of it, so the index often moves roughly opposite to EURUSD. Our EURUSD page and USDJPY page show the two largest pieces.

Our guide on what moves the gold price sets the dollar beside the other drivers.

Use it as context

The dollar helps explain a move; it rarely predicts the next one reliably on its own. If a rule of yours uses the dollar as a filter, test it on prices it was not tuned on, with real costs inside, before you trust it. And check the economic calendar for the US news that moves both at once.

FAQ

What is the dollar index (DXY)?

A measure of the US dollar against six major currencies: the euro, the Japanese yen, the British pound, the Canadian dollar, the Swedish krona and the Swiss franc. The euro has by far the largest weight, more than half.

Why does gold usually fall when the dollar rises?

Gold is priced in dollars. A stronger dollar makes gold dearer for buyers paying in other currencies, and a stronger dollar often comes with higher US interest rates, which make an asset with no interest less attractive.

Do gold and the dollar always move in opposite directions?

No. In a sharp crisis both can rise as money looks for safety, and for months at a time other drivers, such as central bank buying, can outweigh the dollar.

Can I trade gold from the dollar index?

The dollar is context, not a trigger. Their link changes over time and is weak over short periods. Any rule that uses it needs testing on prices it was not tuned on, with costs inside.

Is EURUSD the same as the dollar index?

Not the same, but close in spirit. The euro is the biggest part of the index, so the dollar index often moves roughly opposite to EURUSD.

Where can I follow the dollar alongside gold?

Watch EURUSD and USDJPY, the largest pieces of the index, next to gold, and the economic calendar for US news that moves all of them at once.
