Gold and inflation: how the CPI report moves XAUUSD
Short answer: Gold has a long reputation as protection against inflation, but over weeks and months it reacts more to what inflation means for interest rates. The US CPI report, usually mid-month at 8:30 am New York time, can move gold sharply. A hotter number can even push gold down, if the market reads it as higher rates for longer.

This is why "inflation is up, so buy gold" often goes wrong on the day the number comes out.
Two different time scales
- Over many years: gold has often held its value as money lost purchasing power, though with long stretches when it did not.
- Around a release: gold reacts to the surprise and to what it means for the Federal Reserve. See gold and interest rates.
Reading the CPI report
- Headline: all items, including food and energy.
- Core: without food and energy, so it says more about the trend. Markets often watch it closely.
- Month on month and year on year: a small surprise in the monthly figure can matter more than the yearly one.
- Forecast against actual: gold moves mainly on the gap between them.

Why hot inflation can sink gold
A higher number than expected can lead traders to expect higher rates for longer. That tends to lift real yields and the dollar, and both tend to weigh on gold. On other days, a hot number lifts gold because the market worries more about inflation than about the Fed. The reaction depends on what is already expected, so there is no fixed rule.

FAQ
Is gold a hedge against inflation?
Over long periods gold has often kept its value as money lost purchasing power, but not reliably year by year. Over months, gold reacts more to interest rate expectations than to inflation itself.
What is the CPI report?
The US consumer price index: a monthly measure of how much a basket of everyday goods and services costs. The headline figure includes food and energy; core leaves them out.
When is the US CPI report released?
Usually around the middle of the month at 8:30 am New York time. The exact dates are on the economic calendar.
Why can gold fall when inflation comes in high?
Hotter inflation can make the Federal Reserve keep rates higher for longer. Higher expected rates and a firmer dollar can weigh on gold more than the inflation itself supports it.
Headline or core: which matters more?
Markets often watch core more closely, because it says more about where inflation is heading. A surprise in either can move gold.
How should I trade around the CPI release?
Decide before the release, in your trading plan. Spreads widen and price can jump past stops in the first seconds. Many traders cut size or stay flat.
