How to trade XAUUSD: a beginner's path from first look to first trade
Short answer: Trading gold well is mostly preparation. Know what the quote means, know what each trade costs, decide the stop before the entry, size the position from the stop, practise on a demo account, and write every trade in a journal. Leveraged gold can lose money fast, so the plan comes before the first order.

This guide is the route. Each step has its own guide, linked below, so nothing is repeated here.
1. Know what you are trading
XAUUSD is the price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars. Brokers offer it as a contract for difference, so you trade the price move and never hold the metal. Start with what XAUUSD is, and see CFD, ETF, futures or physical gold for the other ways to get gold exposure.
2. Know what moves it and when it trades
Gold reacts to interest rates, the dollar, inflation and fear. Read what moves the gold price, check the trading hours and keep an economic calendar open on days with big releases.
3. Know the costs
Every trade pays the spread, and a trade held overnight can pay a swap. Margin and leverage decide how much money a position ties up and how fast a small move hurts.
4. Decide the risk first
Choose how much you accept losing on one trade, place the stop loss where the idea is wrong, and work out the size from that distance with the lot size guide. A small account means a small size, not a bigger risk. See also how much to risk per trade.
5. Pick a method and test it
Any rule, from support and resistance to an opening range breakout, needs a test with costs in it. Use the Strategy Tester guide before you trust it.
6. Practise, then go small
Run the plan on a demo account first. When you move to real money, use the smallest size and follow demo to live gold trading. Keep a trading journal so each trade teaches you something.
The Monthly Pass and the Lifetime Pass are software licences for your own MetaTrader account. They score every robot and strategy you run the same way, with costs inside every number. See the plans.
FAQ
How do I start trading gold?
Learn what the XAUUSD quote is, pick a regulated broker, open a demo account, and practise with a written plan before any real money. Most of the work is in the plan, not in the platform.
Is XAUUSD forex?
It is quoted like a currency pair, gold against the US dollar, and sold by forex brokers. But the product is gold, not a currency, and its hours, costs and drivers differ from those of currency pairs.
How much money do I need to trade gold?
It depends on your broker's minimum lot and on how much you accept losing per trade. A small account can only take small positions, and the stop sets the size. See the small account guide.
What should I decide before I place a trade?
The entry, the stop, the size, and the reason the idea is wrong if the stop is hit. Write the four down before the order, not after.
How do I know if a gold strategy works?
Test it on past data with costs included, then run it on a demo account. A rule that looks good on a chart often fails once spread and slippage are counted.
Can I lose more than I put in?
On leveraged products you can lose all of your deposit quickly, and with some brokers more. Read your broker's risk terms and keep each trade's risk small.
