Opening range breakout on gold: how it works and how to test it
Short answer: An opening range breakout marks the high and low of the first part of a session and trades a break out of it, with a stop on the other side or at a multiple of ATR. It is simple to describe and easy to make look good on a chart. Test the exact rule on years of gold prices with costs, and judge it on prices it was not tuned on.

The rule is popular because it is clear: there is a range, a trigger, a stop and a target. That is also what makes it testable.
The rule in four parts
- The rangeThe high and low of the first minutes of a session, such as the London or New York open. See gold trading hours.
- The triggerA break above the high (buy) or below the low (sell).
- The stopThe other side of the range, or a multiple of ATR.
- The targetA multiple of the risk, or the end of the session. See the risk reward ratio guide.
The traps
- False breaks that reverse as soon as you are in.
- The spread at the open, which is wider than later in the session. See the gold spread guide.
- News inside the range window. See how to use an economic calendar.
- Tuning: the range length, the session and the target all invite fitting to the past.
Testing it properly
Write every setting down before you test. Run it on years of prices with spread and commission charged, then double the costs. Keep the latest part of the data unseen until the end. See how to backtest a gold strategy in MT5 and what a real gold EA backtest should include.
What our own test found
We tested a New York opening range breakout through our locked judge. It was turned down because it failed the luck test, and the result is on the record with the exact test it failed. A rule that looks good on a chart can still fail an honest test.

FAQ
What is an opening range breakout?
A rule that marks the high and low of the first part of a trading session, then trades a break above or below that range. The idea is that a move out of an early range often continues.
Which session do traders use on gold?
Often the London open or the New York open, when volume rises. The right session and range length are settings to test, not facts.
Where does the stop go?
Common choices are the other side of the range or a multiple of ATR from the entry. A wide range means a wide stop and a smaller lot.
What are the traps?
False breaks that reverse, wide spreads at the open, news spikes inside the range window and rules tuned to one stretch of prices. Counted costs hurt most because the stop is often small.
Does the opening range breakout work on gold?
It depends on the exact settings and the years you test. Many look good on part of the data and fail on prices they were not tuned on. Test with costs and keep part of the data unseen.
Has BaroqTech tested it?
Yes. Our judge turned down our New York opening-range breakout because it failed the luck test, and the result is on our public record.
