Best time to trade gold: the hours that move most
Short answer: Gold usually moves most when London and New York are both open, from about 8:00 am to noon New York time, and in the minutes after big US news. It is usually quietest late in the New York afternoon and early in the Asian session. The best hours for you depend on whether your rules need movement or calm.

"Best" is not a property of the clock. A breakout rule needs the price to travel, so it prefers busy hours. A rule that buys dips inside a range prefers calm hours, because big moves break the range. Start from what your rules need, then look at when gold delivers it.
When gold moves most
- London open: from about 8:00 am London time, when the main physical gold market starts its day.
- London and New York overlap: about 8:00 am to noon New York time. Both large centres are trading, and this is usually the busiest stretch of the day.
- US news: the jobs report, inflation figures and growth data come out at 8:30 am New York time. Federal Reserve decisions come at 2:00 pm New York time. Gold can move several dollars in seconds.
When gold is quiet
- Late New York afternoon: after London has closed, activity usually falls away until the daily break at 5:00 pm New York time.
- Early Asia: the first hours after the daily restart are often slow, with wider spreads.
Quiet hours are not free. With fewer buyers and sellers, the spread can be wider, so a small move costs more of your target.

Size for the hour you trade
The same stop distance carries different risk at different hours. A 3 dollar stop may be wide at 4:00 pm and narrow at 8:35 am. Busier hours often need a wider stop, and a wider stop needs a smaller size to risk the same money. The position size calculator turns your stop and your risk into a lot size.
Test before you trust an hour
If a rule seems to work better at certain hours, check it on prices it was not tuned on, with real costs inside. Splitting results by hour cuts the number of trades in each group, and small groups are often luck.
FAQ
What is the best time of day to trade gold?
There is no single best time; it depends on your rules. Gold usually moves most when London and New York are both open, from about 8:00 am to noon New York time. Rules that need movement often trade then. Rules that need calm prices often avoid it.
When is gold most volatile?
Around the London open, during the London and New York overlap, and in the minutes after big US news such as the jobs report, inflation data and Federal Reserve decisions.
When is gold quietest?
Usually late in the New York afternoon and in the early Asian hours. Spreads can be wider in thin hours, so quiet does not always mean cheap to trade.
Should I trade gold during news?
That is your own decision. Around big news, prices can jump past stops and spreads widen. If you do trade then, size for a stop that may fill far from its price.
Is Monday a good day to trade gold?
Gold can open on Monday at a different price from Friday's close, after weekend news. Stops left open over the weekend can fill at that new price. Many traders wait for the first hours to settle.
How do I find the best hours for my own strategy?
Test it. Split your trade history by hour of entry and compare the results after costs. Hours with too few trades prove nothing either way.
