Fibonacci retracement on gold: how to draw it, and what it can and cannot do
Short answer: A Fibonacci retracement draws lines at set fractions of a price move, usually 23.6, 38.2, 50, 61.8 and 78.6 percent, between a swing low and a swing high. Traders watch them as places where a pullback in gold might pause. They are a rough map, not a rule: price often ignores them, and any rule built on them needs a test with costs.

1. Where the numbers come from
The levels are built from ratios of the Fibonacci number sequence, in which each number is the sum of the two before it. Dividing one number by the one after it, far enough along, gives about 0.618, and other divisions give 0.382 and 0.236. Nobody has shown that gold respects them for a reason in nature. Traders use them because they are widely watched, and the 50 percent line is added because half a move is a common place to stop. For the trend that gives you a swing, see technical analysis on gold.
2. How to draw it
Find a clear swing, a run of price that is easy to see on the chart. In an uptrend click the swing low, then drag to the swing high. In a downtrend click the swing high first. The platform draws the lines for you. The choice of swing is the weak point: two traders can draw two sets of lines on the same chart. Choose the swing before you look at what price does near the levels, and keep it, otherwise you will end up fitting the lines to the past.
3. What to look for
A pullback that stops near a level, then moves back in the direction of the trend, is what traders hope for. It is stronger when the level lines up with something else, such as a support or resistance area or a round number. A level on its own proves little. Price can run straight through all of them, especially around news, so check the economic calendar first.
4. Stops and size
If you trade a bounce from a level, a stop just beyond the next level leaves room for a normal wobble. How far that is, measured in dollars, decides the size, as in how to set a stop loss on gold and how to calculate lot size for gold. ATR shows how far gold normally moves, which helps you judge whether the stop is realistic.
5. Testing a Fibonacci rule
A rule such as "buy a pullback to the 61.8 line in an uptrend" must say how the swing is chosen, where the entry, stop and exit are, and how big the trade is. Then backtest it in MT5 with the spread and swap charged, on data you did not use to choose the levels. We have not tested Fibonacci rules as a strategy, and no BaroqTech strategy has passed our judge yet, so treat this page as an explanation, not a method. Our gold numbers page shows how far gold usually moves in each hour of the day.

FAQ
What is a Fibonacci retracement on gold?
It is a tool that draws horizontal lines between a swing low and a swing high, at set fractions of the move. Traders watch those lines as places where a pullback might pause.
Which Fibonacci levels are used on gold?
The usual ones are 23.6, 38.2, 50, 61.8 and 78.6 percent of the move. The 50 percent line is not a Fibonacci ratio, but most platforms include it.
How do I draw a Fibonacci retracement?
In an uptrend, click the swing low first and drag to the swing high. In a downtrend, click the swing high first and drag to the swing low. Use a clear swing, not a small wiggle.
Do Fibonacci levels really work on gold?
Price sometimes pauses near them and often does not. Many traders watch the same lines, which can make them matter, but nothing guarantees it. Test any rule that uses them with costs.
Which swing should I use?
Two traders can pick different swings and get different lines. Pick the swing before you look at price near the levels, write it down, and keep to it, so you do not fit the lines afterwards.
Can I place a stop loss at a Fibonacci level?
You can put it just beyond a level so a normal wobble does not hit it, but the stop distance decides the size of the trade. Work the size out from the stop, not from the level.
