S&P 500 for beginners: what the index is and how people trade it
Short answer: The S&P 500 is an index of about five hundred large US companies. You cannot buy the index itself, so people trade it through an index CFD at a broker, a future, or an ETF that follows it. It is a deep, widely watched market, but leverage can still lose money faster than you expect, so size every trade from the stop.

1. What the index is
The S&P 500 tracks about five hundred large US companies and weights them by size, so the biggest ones move it most. When a news show says the US market rose or fell, this is usually the number it means. Our S&P 500 numbers page shows how far it usually moves.
2. Three ways to trade it
- An index CFD at your broker, under a symbol such as US500 or SPX500 that differs by broker. You choose the size and there is usually no expiry.
- A future, such as the E-mini, a contract on an exchange with a fixed size and an expiry date. There are smaller micro contracts too.
- An ETF that tracks the index, bought like a share.
They follow the same index but cost and behave differently. For the same split on gold, see CFD, ETF, futures or physical.
3. What moves it
Company earnings, interest rates, inflation, the US jobs report and the general mood about the US economy. Many of these arrive on a schedule, so keep an economic calendar open. Gold and stocks sometimes move in opposite directions and sometimes together, so do not assume a link.
4. When it trades
The US cash market is open on weekday afternoons and evenings in European time. Index futures and most index CFDs trade for far longer with a short daily break, but volume is thinnest outside the US session, and a gap can open when the cash market starts. Read the sessions in your broker's contract specification before you trade.
5. Your first trade, sized from the stop
Decide where the idea is proven wrong, then work the lot size back from the amount you accept to lose. A wider stop means a smaller size, and the cost of the spread comes off every trade. Read how much to risk per trade first. These guides are written for gold, and the arithmetic is the same on any market. Practise on a demo account and keep a journal.
6. What we have not tested
We have not tested any rule on the S&P 500, and no BaroqTech strategy has passed our judge yet, so this page explains the index and promises nothing. If you want a rule, write it down and backtest it with costs first.
The Monthly Pass and the Lifetime Pass are software licences for your own MetaTrader account. They score every robot and strategy you run the same way, with costs inside every number. See the plans.
