How to use an economic calendar for gold trading
Short answer: An economic calendar lists the coming data releases and central bank decisions with their time and expected impact. For gold, the high-impact US events matter most: Federal Reserve decisions, inflation, the jobs report and growth data. Check it every week, mark the times, and decide in advance what you do with open trades around each one.

Gold can sit still for hours and then move several dollars in a second when a number comes out. The calendar tells you when those seconds are. Trading without it means being surprised by events that were announced weeks ago.
How to read it
- Time: when the number is published. Our economic calendar shows US events in New York time.
- Currency: which economy the event belongs to. For gold, watch USD first.
- Impact: high, medium or low, a rough guide to how much it usually moves the market.
- Forecast and actual: the market moves mostly on the surprise between the two.
You can filter our calendar to high-impact events or to one currency.
The events that move gold
- Federal Reserve decisions: 2:00 pm New York time. Dates for the year are on the central bank calendar.
- Inflation figures: usually 8:30 am New York time.
- The jobs report: usually the first Friday of the month at 8:30 am. See gold and the jobs report.
- Growth data and other central banks: they move gold mostly through the dollar. See gold and the dollar index.
A weekly routine
- Step 1On Sunday, open the calendar and note every high-impact USD event of the week.
- Step 2Write the times in your broker's server time too. See gold trading hours.
- Step 3For each one, decide now: trade it, reduce size, or be flat. Put it in your trading plan.
- Step 4Size open trades for a jump past the stop with the position size calculator.
Around the release
Spreads widen just before and after, and the first move is often reversed. If your rules do not trade news, being flat a few minutes before is the simplest protection. See the gold spread guide for why your stop can be hit even when the chart does not touch it.
Let an agent wait for the release
A Baroq AI agent can pause around big releases: set the minutes, and new demo trades wait around high-impact releases for that market's currencies. If the calendar cannot be read, they wait too.
The Monthly Pass and the Lifetime Pass are software licences for your own MetaTrader account. They score every robot and strategy you run the same way, with costs inside every number. See the plans.
FAQ
What is an economic calendar?
A list of upcoming data releases and central bank decisions, with their date, time, currency and expected impact. It tells you when the market is likely to jump.
Which events on the calendar move gold most?
US events that change the expected path of interest rates: Federal Reserve decisions, inflation figures, the jobs report and growth data. Other central banks matter too, mostly through the dollar.
What do forecast and actual mean?
The forecast is what economists expected; the actual is the published number. Markets react mainly to the surprise between them, not to the number alone.
What do the impact levels mean?
A rough guide to how much an event usually moves its currency: high, medium or low. High-impact US events are the ones to plan your gold trades around.
What time zone are calendar times in?
Each calendar says. Ours shows US events in New York time. Check it against your broker's server clock, which is often two or three hours ahead of London.
Should I avoid trading during high-impact news?
That is your own decision. Around big releases spreads widen and stops can fill past their price. Decide in your trading plan whether you trade, reduce size or stay out.
