Nasdaq 100 for beginners: what the index holds and how people trade it
Short answer: The Nasdaq 100 is an index of one hundred of the largest companies listed on the Nasdaq exchange, without banks, and it leans heavily on technology. It often swings more than the S&P 500. You trade it through an index CFD, a future or an ETF, and because the moves are wide, the stop is wide and the size has to be small.

1. What is in the index
The index holds one hundred large companies listed on Nasdaq, leaving out banks and other financial firms. Technology is the biggest part, and a handful of very large companies carry a large share of the total. That is why their earnings can move the whole number. For the broader index, see S&P 500 for beginners.
2. Three ways to trade it
- An index CFD at your broker, with a symbol such as US100 or NAS100 that differs by broker. You choose the size and there is usually no expiry.
- A future, a contract on an exchange with a fixed size and an expiry date, with smaller micro versions.
- An ETF that follows the index, bought like a share.
All three follow the same index and cost and behave differently. The same split for gold is in CFD, ETF, futures or physical.
3. Why it swings
With a few big technology names carrying much of the index, one earnings report can move it. Technology shares are also sensitive to interest rates, because future profits are worth less when rates are high. Add inflation and the jobs report, and a calm morning can turn fast. Keep an economic calendar open.
4. Size from the stop
A bigger swing means a wider stop, and a wider stop means a smaller size for the same amount at risk. Decide where the idea is proven wrong, then work back. How much to risk per trade, how to set a stop and lot size are written for gold, and the arithmetic is the same here. Check the spread at the time you trade, because it comes off every trade, and read the contract specification for the contract size and the sessions.
5. What we have not tested
We have not tested any rule on the Nasdaq, and no BaroqTech strategy has passed our judge yet, so this page explains the index and promises nothing. If you want a rule, write it down and backtest it with costs first, and practise on a demo account. Our markets pages show how far markets usually move.
The Monthly Pass and the Lifetime Pass are software licences for your own MetaTrader account. They score every robot and strategy you run the same way, with costs inside every number. See the plans.
FAQ
What is the Nasdaq 100?
It is an index of one hundred of the largest companies listed on the Nasdaq exchange, excluding banks and other financial firms. It leans heavily on technology.
How is it different from the S&P 500?
The S&P 500 holds about five hundred large US companies across all sectors. The Nasdaq 100 holds fewer, with a bigger share in technology, so it often moves more in percentage terms in either direction.
How do I trade the Nasdaq 100?
Most platforms offer an index CFD under a symbol such as US100 or NAS100 that differs by broker. You can also use futures or an ETF that follows the index. They track the same index but have different contract sizes and costs.
Why does the Nasdaq swing so much?
A handful of very large technology companies carry a big share of the index, so their earnings and news move the whole number. Interest rate news also hits technology shares hard.
What moves it?
Earnings from the biggest companies, interest rates, inflation and jobs data, and the mood about growth. Check an economic calendar before holding a trade through news.
Is a bigger move a better trade?
No. A bigger move means a wider stop, and a wider stop means a smaller size for the same risk. Size from the stop, not from how exciting the chart looks.
