Day trading gold: sessions, costs and the risks
Short answer: Day trading gold means opening and closing trades within the same day. The moves are small, so costs take a large share of each gain, and one news release can run past a stop in seconds. Most short-term rules that look good on a chart fail an honest test with costs.

Sessions
Gold is most active when London and New York overlap, and around releases such as the jobs report. Asian hours are usually quieter. See gold trading hours, the best time to trade gold and an economic calendar.
Costs
Every trade pays the spread and maybe a commission. A rule that makes a small gain per trade can turn negative once they are counted. See gold scalping risks.
Size and stops
Decide the most you will lose on one trade, place the stop at a level where the idea is wrong, then work out the lot. See how much to risk per trade, how to set a stop loss and lot size for a small account.
The risks people skip
- News spikes and gaps, where the fill is worse than the stop.
- Overtrading after a loss.
- Tuned rules that only fit the past.
Keep a record of every trade. See a trading journal for gold.
Testing a day trading rule
Write it down, test it with a backtest in MT5, then trade it on demo. One of our own intraday ideas, an opening range breakout, was turned down by our judge; see the record.
The Monthly Pass and the Lifetime Pass are software licences for your own MetaTrader account. They score every robot and strategy you run the same way, with costs inside every number. See the plans.
FAQ
What is day trading gold?
Opening and closing trades within the same day, usually to catch intraday moves, with no position left overnight.
When is the best time to day trade gold?
Volume is usually highest when London and New York overlap. Spreads are often wider at the open and around news.
How much can I make day trading gold?
There is no safe figure. Many retail traders lose money, and costs from the spread and commission eat small frequent gains.
Why do costs matter so much?
Short-term trades aim for small moves, so the spread and commission are a large share of each gain. Count them in every test.
Do I need a stop loss?
Yes. Set it before you enter, size the lot from it, and know the most you can lose on the trade.
How do I check a day trading rule?
Test it on years of prices with costs, double the costs, keep part of the data unseen, then run it on demo before real money.
