How to set a daily loss limit for a trading bot

Short answer: A daily loss limit stops a bot from opening new trades once the day's loss reaches a number you set. It keeps one bad day from becoming a bad month. Pick a number you can accept without wanting to override it, set it before the bot runs, and keep a stop on every trade as well.

Why a bot needs one

A bot does not get tired or scared, which is good. It also does not get cautious. After five losing trades it will take the sixth, if the rules say so. A daily limit is the part that says "enough for today."

How to pick the number

  1. Start from the risk per trade. If you risk a small share of the account on each trade, the daily limit is a small multiple of that. See how much to risk per trade.
  2. Step 2Two to three times the trade risk is a common range. A few losses in a row end the day without ending the month.
  3. Check it against your worst stretch.Look at the biggest drawdown in your test and ask if you could sit through it. See drawdown.
  4. Write it down.A limit you decide in the middle of a loss is not a limit.
The steps, in order.

What a daily limit cannot do

Pair it with a stop on every trade, a pause around big news such as the jobs report, and a demo run before any live size. See how to test a trading bot before using real money.

Where Baroq fits

A Baroq AI agent cannot be saved without a stop on every trade and a loss limit per trade and per day. You can watch one respect its limits on the Baroq front page, where a paper agent replays the last ten days of real prices with the spread paid on every fill. A replay of the past is not a promise. Agents trade demo money only, and live trading is coming soon.

The Monthly Pass and the Lifetime Pass are software licences for your own MetaTrader account. They score every robot and strategy you run the same way, with costs inside every number. See the plans.

FAQ

What is a daily loss limit?

It is a rule that stops a bot from opening new trades once the day's loss reaches a set amount. It turns one bad day into a capped loss instead of an open-ended one.

How big should a daily loss limit be?

Many traders set it at two to three times the risk per trade, so a few losing trades in a row end the day. Pick a number you can accept without wanting to override it.

Does a daily loss limit close open trades?

Not always. Some tools only stop new trades. Check what yours does with positions already open, and keep a stop on every trade either way.

Can a daily loss limit fail?

Yes. A gap or a fast move can take a trade past its stop, and a bot that is switched off cannot enforce anything. The limit reduces risk, it does not remove it.

Should I stop the bot by hand after a bad day?

Decide the rule in advance, then let the limit apply it. Deciding in the middle of a loss is when most people break their own rules.

Do Baroq agents have a daily loss limit?

Yes. A Baroq agent cannot be saved without a stop on every trade and a loss limit per trade and per day. Agents trade demo money only, and live trading is coming soon.
