Support and resistance on gold: how to draw and test levels

Short answer: Support and resistance are price zones where gold has turned before. Mark a few clear ones from the daily and four-hour charts, plus round numbers, and treat them as zones, not exact lines. Put stops beyond the zone with room for the spread. Before trusting any level strategy, test the exact rule on years of prices with costs.

Levels are the most drawn lines on any gold chart, and the easiest to fool yourself with: after the fact, every turn seems to have had a line waiting for it.

Marking levels without clutter

  1. Step 1Start on the daily chart: mark the clearest swing highs and lows from the last months.
  2. Step 2Add the four-hour chart: only levels that were touched more than once.
  3. Step 3Add round numbers near the price.
  4. Step 4Draw zones a few dollars wide, not single lines. Gold rarely turns at the exact same cent.
The steps, in order.

If your chart has more than a handful of levels near the price, you will always find one that "worked".

Testing a level rule

"Buy at support" is not a rule a computer can test. "Buy when the price touches the lowest low of the last 20 days, stop 1.5 ATR below, target twice the risk" is. Write it that precisely, then test it on years of prices with costs, and judge it on prices it was not tuned on. FAQ

What is support and resistance?

Price areas where gold has turned before: support below the price, where falls have stopped, and resistance above, where rises have stalled. They are zones, not exact prices.

Why do round numbers matter on gold?

Many traders place orders at round prices, such as whole hundreds of dollars, so those prices often see more activity. That makes them worth marking, not a guarantee of a turn.

Which time frame should I draw levels on?

Start with the daily and four-hour charts, where levels come from more trading, then refine on the time frame you trade. Levels from higher time frames tend to matter more.

What happens when a level breaks?

Old support can act as resistance after a break, and the other way round. It does not always happen, so treat it as an idea to test, not a rule.

Where should my stop go near a level?

Beyond the zone, not on the exact line, with room for the spread and normal noise. Many stops sit at the same obvious prices and get hit together.

Do support and resistance strategies work?

Some level rules may, many do not once costs are counted. Test the exact rule on years of prices, with costs, and keep part of the data unseen before you trust it.
