Scalping gold: the costs and risks to check first
Short answer: Scalping gold means many short trades aiming for small moves, so costs decide most of the result. The spread and commission come off every trade, slippage and news spikes add to losses, and the win rate you need rises with them. Work out your real cost per trade, read your broker's rules, and test on real ticks with costs doubled before risking money.

A scalper does not need gold to move far. They need it to move a little, often, and for the costs to stay smaller than the edge. That last part is where most scalping rules fail.
The arithmetic of a small target
Take an example, not any broker's prices: a target of 1.50 dollars, a stop of 1.50 dollars and a spread of 0.30 dollars.
- A win nets 1.20 after the spread; a loss costs 1.80.
- Break-even win rate: 1.80 ÷ (1.20 + 1.80) = 60%, before any commission.
The same spread on a 6 dollar target barely moves the line. On a 1.50 dollar target it decides it. See the gold spread guide and the risk reward ratio guide.
The other risks
- Slippage: in fast moves, orders fill beyond their price. Small targets feel every fill.
- News spikes: around the jobs report and central bank decisions, gold can jump past stops in a second.
- Wide spreads at the wrong hour: around the daily break and in thin hours. See the best time to trade gold.
- Broker rules: some accounts limit very short trades, trading around news or certain EAs. Read your terms.
- Latency: the time between your order and the broker matters more when the target is small. Many scalpers run MT5 on a server close to the broker.
Test it the hard way
Backtests flatter scalping more than any other style, because ideal fills and missing costs make small wins look certain. Test on real ticks with recorded spreads and a random delay, charge commission, then double the costs and run it again. Our guide on how to backtest a gold strategy in MT5 shows the settings.
Size like any other trade
Short trades do not need a different risk rule. Decide the money you accept to lose per trade, then size from the stop with the position size calculator. Many trades a day means a losing streak can arrive within hours, so keep a daily loss limit in your trading plan.
The Monthly Pass and the Lifetime Pass are software licences for your own MetaTrader account. They score every robot and strategy you run the same way, with costs inside every number. See the plans.
FAQ
What is scalping gold?
Taking many short trades on XAUUSD, often lasting seconds to minutes, each aiming for a small move. Because each target is small, costs take a large share of every trade.
Why are costs so important for scalping?
You pay the spread and any commission on every trade, whatever its size. With a target of a dollar or two, a spread of a few tenths of a dollar can take a large part of each win and add to each loss.
What win rate does a gold scalper need?
More than for wider trades, because costs shift the break-even line. Work it out with the real spread and commission included: the break-even win rate is the loss after costs divided by (the win after costs plus the loss after costs).
Do brokers allow scalping on gold?
Many do, some limit very short trades or trading around news, and terms change. Read your account's rules before you start, not after a dispute.
Is scalping gold safer because trades are short?
Not by itself. Short trades still face news spikes, spreads that widen in a second and fills past your stop. Many small trades also mean many chances for a costly fill.
How should I test a gold scalping EA?
On real ticks with recorded spreads, a random delay, commission charged and the costs then doubled. Scalping results that need perfect fills rarely survive a live account.
