Gold technical analysis: the basics and what to test
Short answer: Technical analysis on gold means reading the price chart: the trend, the levels where price turned before, how far it usually moves, and the shape of recent candles. It gives you levels and a plan. It does not tell you what happens next, so a rule built on it still needs a test with costs.

Trend
A trend is a run of higher highs and higher lows (up) or lower highs and lower lows (down). Moving averages smooth the path. Say what you will do in a trend and what you will do in a range, because the same rule often works in one and loses in the other.
Support and resistance
Levels where gold stopped or turned before. They are zones, not exact lines. See support and resistance on gold.
Volatility
ATR tells you how far gold moves on a normal day. It sets how wide a stop loss needs to be and therefore how big the lot can be.
Candles and momentum
Candlestick patterns show who won each period. Momentum tools such as RSI show how stretched a move is. Both are easy to over-read.
Where it breaks
- News. A jobs or inflation release can run through every level. See gold and the jobs report and gold and inflation.
- Fitting. With enough settings, any chart pattern looks great on the past.
- Costs. The spread eats small, frequent gains.
Turning a chart idea into a rule
Write down the entry, the stop, the target and the lot. Test it with a backtest in MT5, keep the latest data unseen, then run it on demo first. Our own ideas go through the same process and many fail; see the record.
The Monthly Pass and the Lifetime Pass are software licences for your own MetaTrader account. They score every robot and strategy you run the same way, with costs inside every number. See the plans.
FAQ
What is technical analysis on gold?
Reading past prices and volume on a chart to look for patterns such as trend, ranges and turning points.
Which tools do traders use most on gold?
Trend lines and moving averages, support and resistance, ATR for volatility, candlestick patterns and momentum tools such as RSI.
Does technical analysis predict gold?
It describes what price has done and gives levels to plan around. It does not predict. Any rule built on it has to be tested on prices it was not tuned on.
Which time frame should I use?
It depends on how long you hold trades. Shorter frames give more trades and more cost and noise, longer frames give fewer and slower ones.
Does news matter more than the chart?
Big releases can move gold past any level in seconds. Check the calendar before you rely on a chart level.
How can I tell if a chart rule works?
Write it down exactly, test it on years of prices with spread and commission, double the costs, and keep part of the data unseen until the end.
