Is gold a safe haven? What happens to gold in a crisis
Short answer: Gold is called a safe haven because money has often moved into it in wars, financial crises and panics. But it is not a one-way bet: in a rush for cash, gold can be sold with everything else at the start of a crisis, and its move on any day also depends on the dollar and interest rates. For a leveraged trader, crisis days bring the widest spreads and the biggest jumps.

"Safe haven" describes what gold has often done for long-term holders. It says nothing about whether a leveraged trade on it is safe.
Why money runs to gold
- No default risk: gold is not a promise from a company or a government.
- History: it has been held as a store of value for centuries.
- Central banks: many hold gold in their reserves.

Why gold can fall first
When markets crash, traders facing losses and margin calls sell what they can, and gold is easy to sell. So gold sometimes drops in the first days of a crisis before money flows back into it. A stronger dollar in a panic can add to the pressure. See gold and the dollar index.
Headlines are not on the calendar
Scheduled releases are on the economic calendar. Wars, attacks and bank failures are not. They can move gold several dollars in seconds, at any hour, including when your stop sits in a thin market.
Managing the risk
- A stop on every trade, placed with the broker.
- Size so that a jump past the stop still fits your limits. Use the position size calculator and how much to risk per trade.
- A daily loss limit in your trading plan.
- Watch the spread: it widens most when news hits. See the gold spread guide.

FAQ
Why is gold called a safe haven?
Because money has often moved into gold during wars, financial crises and market panics. Gold carries no company or government default risk, and it has been held as a store of value for centuries.
Does gold always rise in a crisis?
No. In a rush for cash, traders sometimes sell gold along with everything else to cover losses or margin calls, so gold can fall at the start of a crisis before recovering.
What is a risk-off day?
A day when investors move away from riskier assets such as shares towards safer ones. Gold often benefits, but its move depends on the dollar and on rates that same day.
How do headlines move gold?
Sudden news, such as a conflict or a bank failure, can move gold several dollars in seconds, often outside the economic calendar, so there is no time to plan around it.
How can I protect a gold trade from sudden news?
Keep a stop on every trade, size so that a jump past the stop is survivable, and keep a daily loss limit. No setting removes the risk of a gap.
Is gold safe to trade with leverage in a crisis?
Gold as an asset and a leveraged gold trade are different things. Leverage multiplies moves both ways, and crisis days have the widest spreads and the biggest jumps.
