Release playbooks
How the releases that move gold most are usually read, and what gold did right after each past one: moves from the last price before the release, in US dollars an ounce and in percent, on Baroq data's gold prices. These are past moves, not a forecast.
US jobs report (non-farm payrolls)
More jobs or faster pay rises than markets expected usually lift the dollar and US yields, and gold tends to fall; a weak report usually does the opposite. Revisions to the two months before can move gold as much as the new number.
Gold after the 68 releases from 2020-02-07 to 2025-12-16: a typical move of 0.30% in the first 15 minutes, 0.33% in the first hour, 0.61% by the New York close (the middle value, up or down). After an hour it was up 40 times and down 28. The biggest first hour: -$32.45 (-1.70%) on 2023-02-03.

US consumer prices (CPI)
Inflation above what markets expected usually means US rates stay high for longer: the dollar and yields rise and gold tends to fall at first. Inflation below expectations usually does the opposite.

US Federal Reserve rate decision
A cut, or a hint of cuts sooner than markets expected, usually weakens the dollar and helps gold; a hold with a firm tone, or a hike, usually does the opposite. The press conference half an hour later often moves gold more than the decision itself.

Good to know
- Impact is our rating of how much an event usually moves gold, currencies and indices: high for the jobs report, CPI, PCE, GDP and every rate decision of the eight major central banks; medium and low for the rest. It is our label, not the agencies'.
- Prices can jump and spreads widen in the minutes around a release, so a stop can fill well away from its price. Some brokers limit trading around these times: read your account's rules.
- Each big US release shows its last published number; when the new number comes out it takes that place. Forecasts and "consensus" numbers are other firms' paid data, so they are not here.
- Times are in UTC; US releases also show New York time. The Bank of Japan sets no fixed hour for its decision, so it has none. Treasury auctions close at 1:00 pm New York time on the day.
