RSI on gold: how to read it, and why overbought is not a sell

Short answer: RSI compares recent gains with recent losses and plots the result between zero and one hundred. Above seventy is called overbought and below thirty oversold, but on a trending market like gold those lines show strength, not a turning point. Use RSI to describe the move, not to predict it, and test any rule with costs.

1. What the line is

The Relative Strength Index was introduced by J. Welles Wilder. It looks at the average gain and the average loss over a number of candles, usually fourteen, and turns the ratio into one line. A high number means most recent candles closed up, a low number means most closed down. It says nothing about the next candle. Our guide to technical analysis on gold shows where it sits among the other tools.

2. Overbought and oversold, in plain words

"Overbought" is a label for a high reading, not an instruction. Gold can rise for days with RSI above seventy, and a trader who sells every time the line crosses it is selling into the strongest part of the move. In a quiet range the same reading often marks a stretch that is about to fade. The difference is the market you are in, so look at the trend first, and use support and resistance to judge whether price is at an edge.

3. Divergence

When price makes a new high but RSI makes a lower one, the push is losing strength. That is a reason to look closer, to tighten a trailing stop maybe, not a reason to reverse a position. Divergence can show up several times while price keeps going.

4. What RSI leaves out

The indicator does not know the spread, the economic calendar or how far gold normally moves, which ATR measures. A stop should come from the chart and the size from the stop, as in how to set a stop loss on gold, never from the RSI line.

5. Testing an RSI rule

If you want a rule such as "buy when RSI crosses back above a level", write the exact entry, exit, stop and size, then backtest it in MT5 with the spread and swap charged. Try it on data you did not use to choose the levels. We have not tested RSI rules as a strategy, and no BaroqTech strategy has passed our judge yet, so treat this as an explanation and not a method. Our gold numbers page shows how far gold usually moves in each hour of the day.

FAQ

What is RSI on gold?

The Relative Strength Index is an indicator that compares recent gains with recent losses and shows the result on a scale from zero to one hundred. On a gold chart it describes how strong the last stretch of price moves was.

What RSI setting should I use for gold?

Most platforms start with a period of fourteen, with lines at seventy and thirty. Those are defaults, not a finding about gold. If you change them, test the change with costs instead of choosing what looks best on one chart.

Does RSI above seventy mean sell gold?

No. In a strong trend gold can stay above seventy for a long time and keep rising. A high reading says the move has been strong, not that it will reverse.

Does RSI work better in a range or in a trend?

Readings at the edges are easier to use in a quiet range, where price tends to return to the middle. In a trend they often fail, so check which of the two you are in first.

What is RSI divergence?

It is when price makes a new high or low but the RSI does not. Traders read it as a weakening move. It is a hint to look closer, and it can appear many times before price turns.

Can I trade gold on RSI alone?

It is a poor idea. One indicator ignores the spread, the news calendar and the stop distance. If you want to use it as a rule, write the rule down and backtest it with costs before real money.
