Candlestick patterns on gold: what they show and what they don't

Short answer: A candlestick shows a period's open, high, low and close. Named patterns such as the pin bar, engulfing candle and doji describe how that fight went. They are a way to read the chart, not an edge on their own: once tested on years of gold prices with costs, a pattern alone rarely holds up. Use them inside a precise rule, and test that rule.

Candles are useful because they compress a lot of price action into one shape. The danger is that the eye finds the patterns that worked and forgets the ones that did not.

Patterns traders name

Gold's daily candles depend on your broker's server clock. See gold trading hours.

Why a pattern is not an edge

On a chart you look at after the fact, the patterns that worked stand out. A fair test takes every pattern the rule would have traded, with the spread and commission charged, on prices the rule was not tuned on. Most pattern rules lose their shine there. See what a real gold EA backtest should include.

Making it testable

"Trade pin bars" is not a rule. "On the four-hour chart, buy after a pin bar whose low is the lowest of 20 bars, stop below the wick, target twice the risk" is. Test it with the MT5 Strategy Tester, then size it with the position size calculator.

The Monthly Pass and the Lifetime Pass are software licences for your own MetaTrader account. They score every robot and strategy you run the same way, with costs inside every number. See the plans.

FAQ

What does a candlestick show?

Four prices for one period: open, high, low and close. The body runs from open to close; the wicks show how far the price went beyond it.

What is a pin bar on gold?

A candle with a small body and a long wick on one side, showing that the price went far one way and came back. Traders read it as rejection of that price.

What is an engulfing pattern?

A candle whose body covers the whole body of the previous candle in the other direction. It shows a change of control within two periods.

What is a doji?

A candle that closes almost where it opened, showing that neither side won the period. On its own it says little.

Do candlestick patterns work on gold?

A pattern alone rarely beats costs once tested on years of prices. Patterns are more useful as part of a precise rule that you test, than as signs to trade on sight.

Why does my broker's candle look different from another chart?

Candles depend on the price feed and the time zone of the server. A broker on a different clock draws different daily candles, especially around the daily close.
