How to set a stop loss on gold (XAUUSD)

Short answer: Put the stop at the price that proves your trade idea wrong, make sure it is wider than gold's normal noise for your time frame and leaves room for the spread, then size the trade so a hit costs only the money you planned to lose. The stop comes first; the lot size follows from it.

A stop has one job: to end the trade when the reason for it is gone. If it is so close that ordinary wiggles hit it, it ends good trades for no reason. If it is so far that a hit wipes out a week, the size was wrong.

Three checks for every stop

  1. The ideaWhere would the price be if you were wrong? Below the low that started the move, above the high of the range, past the level the setup depends on.
  2. The noiseIs that point outside gold's normal movement for your time frame? An Average True Range (ATR) on your chart shows how far gold usually moves per bar.
  3. The costAdd room for the spread. Sell trades close at the ask, which sits above the chart, and the spread widens at the daily break and around news. See the gold spread guide.
The steps, in order.

Then the size

Once the stop is set, the lot size is arithmetic:

Lot size = money you accept to lose ÷ (stop distance in dollars × ounces per lot).

Our guide on how to calculate lot size for gold walks through it, and the position size calculator does it for you. A wide stop is fine when the size is small enough.

When a stop fills badly

A stop is a request, not a promise. At the Sunday open, around big news and in thin hours, the price can jump past it and fill further away. Check the economic calendar and the gold trading hours before you hold through those moments, and size so a worse fill is still survivable.

Mistakes that cost the most

Write your stop rules into a trading plan while you are calm, and follow them when you are not.

Try a stop on demo money

Every trade of a Baroq AI agent has a stop, and you choose how far away it sits. Shape one, let it trade demo money and read its log: each stop and each exit has its reason written next to it.

FAQ

How many dollars should a stop loss be on gold?

There is no fixed number. Gold's normal movement changes with the hour and the month. Put the stop where your trade idea is proven wrong, check that it is wider than normal noise for your time frame, then size the trade from it.

Should I set the stop first or the lot size first?

The stop first. Decide where the idea is wrong, then work out the lot size that loses only the money you accept at that stop. Squeezing the stop to fit a size you wanted is how stops get hit by noise.

What is an ATR stop?

A stop set at a multiple of the Average True Range, a measure of how far the price usually moves per bar. It widens the stop when gold is moving more and narrows it when gold is calm.

Why does my stop get hit just before the price turns?

Often because it sits inside normal noise or right at an obvious level where many stops gather. For sell trades the spread also matters, because they close at the ask, which sits above the chart.

Will my stop always fill at its price?

No. In a fast market, at the Sunday open or around big news, a stop becomes a market order and can fill past its price. Size so that a fill worse than planned is still survivable.

Should I move my stop?

Moving it further away to avoid a loss turns a planned loss into an unplanned one. Moving it closer to lock in gains is a choice your rules should make in advance, not in the moment.
