How to trade Bitcoin (BTCUSD): CFDs, weekend hours, costs and risks
Short answer: A Bitcoin CFD follows the Bitcoin price in US dollars through your broker, and you never hold a coin. The market runs every day of the week, the swings are wide, and spreads can widen at quiet hours and at the weekend. That means a wider stop and a smaller size than on gold. Read the contract specification of the symbol, then size every trade from the stop.

1. What you are trading
On most retail platforms Bitcoin appears as a symbol such as BTCUSD. It is a CFD: a contract with the broker that follows the price. You can go long or short, and you own no coin and have no wallet. Owning coins is a different thing with different risks. For how the instrument compares with gold as a store of value and as a trade, read gold vs Bitcoin.
2. A market that never closes
The Bitcoin market runs around the clock, every day. Your broker decides what its CFD does at the weekend: some keep it open, some close it, and some keep it open with a wider spread and thin liquidity. A gap can open when a closed symbol reopens, and a stop can fill away from where you set it. Read the sessions in the contract specification, as you would for gold trading hours.
3. The costs
- Spread: often wide, and wider when few people trade. See spread explained.
- Financing: holding past the daily rollover costs a charge. Read it in the specification, like the gold swap.
- Commission: some brokers add one. Check all three.
4. Size from the stop, with a wide stop
Bitcoin swings are wide, so a stop that sits outside normal noise is wide, and a wide stop means a small size for the same amount at risk. Decide where the idea is proven wrong, then work back. How much to risk per trade and lot size are written for gold, and the arithmetic is the same here. Leverage on crypto CFDs is often lower than on gold, so check the margin one lot ties up.
5. What moves Bitcoin
Mood and news move Bitcoin fast, and it also reacts to interest rates and the dollar. We list our market numbers on the crypto page. Keep an economic calendar open for the macro days.
6. What we have not tested
We have not tested any Bitcoin rule, and no BaroqTech strategy has passed our judge yet, so this page explains the instrument and promises nothing. If you want a rule, write it down and backtest it with costs first, and practise on a demo account.
The Monthly Pass and the Lifetime Pass are software licences for your own MetaTrader account. They score every robot and strategy you run the same way, with costs inside every number. See the plans.
FAQ
What is a Bitcoin CFD?
It is a contract with your broker that follows the Bitcoin price in US dollars. You can go long or short, and you never own or hold any coin.
Is Bitcoin open on weekends?
The Bitcoin market itself runs around the clock, every day. Brokers differ: some offer their Bitcoin CFD all week, some close it or widen the spread at the weekend. Read your broker's specification.
Why is Bitcoin so volatile?
It is a younger and smaller market than gold or the big stock indices, it trades around the clock, and news and mood move it fast. The same position size can lose much more than on gold.
Can I use the same lot size as on gold?
No. The contract size and the price are different, and so is the typical stop distance. Work the size out from your stop and the contract specification of the Bitcoin symbol.
What are the costs of a Bitcoin CFD?
The spread, which is often wide and can widen further at quiet hours, and a financing charge for holding past the daily rollover. Some brokers add a commission. Check all three.
Is a Bitcoin CFD the same as owning Bitcoin?
No. A CFD follows the price, uses leverage, has a financing cost and gives you no coin to own. Owning coins means a wallet or an exchange account and different risks.
