What moves the gold price: the drivers traders watch

Short answer: Gold moves mainly with real interest rates and the US dollar. On top of that come central bank buying, fear in markets, money flowing into or out of gold funds, and physical demand from jewellery and bar buyers. News that changes the expected path of interest rates moves it fastest.

Real interest rates

Gold pays no interest. When interest rates after inflation rise, the income you give up by holding gold rises too, and gold tends to weaken. When real rates fall, gold tends to gain. This link is strong over years and looser over days. Our rates page shows what the market expects from the Fed.

The US dollar

Gold is priced in dollars, so a stronger dollar usually weighs on it and a weaker dollar helps. The link breaks at times, for example when both are bought out of fear.

Central banks

Central banks hold gold as a reserve that is no one else's debt. They have been large buyers in recent years. Their decisions on rates move gold even more: our central bank calendar lists the next meetings.

Fear and safe-haven demand

War, banking stress and political shocks can send buyers to gold. In a sudden crash, though, traders sometimes sell gold to cover losses elsewhere, so the first move can be down.

Fund flows and futures positioning

Gold funds and futures traders can move the price faster than physical buyers. The weekly positioning of large speculators is on our Who holds what page, explained in how to read the COT report for gold.

Physical demand and supply

Jewellery, bar and coin buying, mostly in China and India, reacts to the price and to the season. Mine supply changes slowly, so it rarely drives short-term moves.

Where the news hits

Inflation data, the US jobs report and central bank decisions move gold the most on the day. They are on our economic calendar, and today's price and news are on the gold page.

FAQ

What is the biggest driver of the gold price?

Over long periods, real interest rates and the US dollar matter most. Gold pays no interest, so when rates after inflation rise, holding gold costs more in income you give up.

Why does gold often fall when the dollar rises?

Gold is priced in dollars. A stronger dollar makes gold more expensive for buyers paying in other currencies, which can cut demand.

Why do central banks buy gold?

To hold a reserve that is no other country's debt. Central banks have been large buyers in recent years, which has supported demand.

Is gold a safe haven?

Often, but not always. In a sudden crash, traders sometimes sell gold to raise cash. In longer periods of stress or high inflation, demand for gold usually rises.

Which economic news moves gold the most?

News that changes the expected path of interest rates: central bank decisions, inflation data and the US jobs report.

Does jewellery demand matter?

Yes, mostly in China and India. It reacts to price, so it tends to rise when gold dips and fall when gold is expensive.
