Gold and the US jobs report (NFP): what happens and how to manage risk

Short answer: The US jobs report, usually on the first Friday of the month at 8:30 am New York time, changes what markets expect from the Federal Reserve, and gold often moves sharply on it. In the first minutes the price can jump both ways, spreads widen and stops can fill past their price. Know the date, size for a jump, and decide in advance whether to hold through it.

The report is often called NFP, for non-farm payrolls: the number of jobs added or lost outside farming in the month before. It is one of the few scheduled events that reliably moves gold within seconds.

Why gold reacts

Gold pays no interest, so it is sensitive to where interest rates are heading. The jobs report is a main input to the Federal Reserve's view of the economy. A surprise in either direction changes the expected path of rates, the dollar moves, and gold moves with them. Our guide on what moves the gold price covers the wider picture.

Decide before, not during

The worst decisions around NFP are made in the seconds after 8:30. Write down in a trading plan whether you hold, reduce or close before the release, and follow it.

FAQ

When is the US jobs report released?

Usually on the first Friday of the month at 8:30 am New York time. The statistics office sometimes moves it, so check the date on an economic calendar each month.

Why does the jobs report move gold?

It changes what markets expect from the Federal Reserve. Stronger jobs can mean higher interest rates for longer, which often weighs on gold. Weaker jobs can mean lower rates, which often supports it.

What happens to gold in the first minutes?

The price can jump several dollars in seconds, sometimes both ways. Spreads widen and orders can fill far from their price. Calm usually returns within the hour, but not always.

Will my stop loss protect me during NFP?

A stop limits the loss in normal markets. In the seconds after the release, the price can jump past it and fill further away. Size the trade so a worse fill is still a loss you can take.

Should I close my gold trades before NFP?

That is your own decision. Some traders close, some reduce size, some hold with a stop they sized for a jump. Some brokers also limit trading around high-impact news, so read your account's rules.

What do traders look at in the report?

The change in jobs against what was expected, revisions to past months, the unemployment rate and average hourly earnings. Surprises matter more than the number itself.
