ATR on gold: how to measure XAUUSD volatility

Short answer: The Average True Range (ATR) shows how far gold has moved per bar on average, usually over the last 14 bars, in dollars of price. Traders use it to set stops outside normal noise and to size trades so the money at risk stays steady when gold gets busier or calmer. It says nothing about direction.

Gold's movement changes a lot from month to month and hour to hour. A stop that was sensible last spring can sit inside ordinary noise today. ATR is the simplest way to see that change on your own chart.

How it is worked out

For each bar, the true range is the largest of:

ATR is the average of the last 14 true ranges (or whatever period you choose). Counting from the previous close catches gaps, such as the jump at the Sunday open, that a plain high-minus-low misses.

In MT5, add it from Insert → Indicators → Oscillators → Average True Range. The value is in price, so on XAUUSD an ATR of 6.20 means about 6.20 dollars per bar.

Using ATR for stops

A stop at a multiple of ATR, for example 1.5 × ATR from the entry, sits outside the moves gold has been making lately and widens automatically when gold gets busier. The multiple and the period are settings to test on prices they were not tuned on, not numbers to copy. Our guide on how to set a stop loss on gold covers the other checks a stop needs.

Using ATR for size

A wider stop needs a smaller lot to risk the same money. With the stop set from ATR, the position size calculator turns it into a lot size. The result: the money at risk per trade stays the same whether gold is calm or wild. Our trend filter lesson shows sizing by volatility on long price histories.

FAQ

What is ATR?

The Average True Range: the average size of each bar's full range over a number of bars, usually 14. On gold it is in dollars of price, so an ATR of 8 on the hourly chart means gold has moved about 8 dollars per hour lately.

How is the true range worked out?

The largest of three numbers: this bar's high minus its low, the gap from the previous close up to this high, and the gap from the previous close down to this low. It counts gaps that a plain high-minus-low would miss.

How do traders use ATR for a stop loss?

They set the stop at a multiple of ATR, such as 1.5 or 2 times, so it sits outside normal noise and widens when gold is moving more. The multiple is a choice to test, not a rule.

Does ATR show the direction of gold?

No. ATR only measures how much the price moves, not which way. A rising ATR can come with a rally or a fall.

Which ATR period is best for gold?

14 bars is the common default. Shorter periods react faster and jump around more; longer ones are smoother and slower. Use the time frame you actually trade.

How does ATR help with position size?

A wider ATR-based stop needs a smaller lot to risk the same money. Sizing from an ATR stop keeps the money at risk steady when gold gets busier or calmer.
