Demo to live gold trading: when to switch and how
Short answer: Trade a demo account until you have a few dozen trades per setup, including a bad stretch, and your results follow your written rules. Then move to a small real account with the same rules and a much smaller size than you want. A demo cannot show real fills, slippage or your nerves, so live results will be worse than demo ones. Plan for that.

The step from demo to live is where many strategies and many traders fail. The market did not change. Real money and real costs did.
What a demo cannot show
- Fills: a demo often fills at the price you click. Live, gold can move before you are filled. See the gold spread guide.
- Spreads in news: they widen most when it matters. See the best time to trade gold.
- Swap and commission: check that the demo charges them. See the gold swap guide.
- You: your hands shake differently with real money.
A careful way across
- Step 1
- Step 2
- Step 3
- Step 4
- Step 5
- Write the rules and your limits in a trading plan.
- Keep a journal on demo. Count in R.
- Backtest the rule with costs. See how to backtest a gold strategy in MT5.
- Start live with the smallest lot. Size from the stop with the position size calculator.
- Keep the same rules. Raise the size slowly, only after the live journal agrees with the demo one.
Compare live with demo
Keep the live and the demo journal side by side. If live R per trade is much lower than demo R per trade, find out why before adding size: costs, fills, or rules not followed. Demo and live numbers should never be added into one total.
The Monthly Pass and the Lifetime Pass are software licences for your own MetaTrader account. They score every robot and strategy you run the same way, with costs inside every number. See the plans.
FAQ
How long should I trade gold on a demo account?
Long enough to see a few dozen trades per setup and a spell of bad luck, usually several weeks at least. A demo that only ran in a good week proves little.
What does a demo account not show?
Real fills, slippage, wider spreads in news, requotes and your own nerves with real money at stake. Demo results are always kinder than live ones.
Are demo results a track record?
No. A demo shows that a rule can be followed and that the software works. It does not show how the rule will do with real fills and real costs.
How much money should I start with on a live account?
An amount you can lose without it changing your life, with a risk per trade small enough that a long losing streak fits inside your limits. Start with the smallest lot your broker allows.
Should I change my rules when I go live?
No. Change the size, not the rules. If the rule needs changes to work live, the demo result was not telling you the truth.
When should I go back to demo?
When you break your own rules, after a change to the strategy, or when a loss limit has been hit and you need to recover calmly. A demo is a place to test, not a place to hide.
